Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder.. or Forgetful.

So.. last night I couldn’t sleep. I tossed and turned for a bit and then put on a movie: “The Man From Snowy River“. I used to love this movie. Growing up we would watch this recorded copy we got off the Disney Channel. We watched it hundreds of times, I am sure. But I hadn’t seen it in years.

It came on one of my movie channels this week so I recorded it. And last night, as I watched it, I wondered – has it always been this corny? From the music (besides the main theme and Jessica’s Theme), to the part where he’s about to get trampled and they zoom on the horse’s eye 3 times with the “dum! dum! dum!” music, or of course the slow motion part when Jessica is grabbing the rope to be saved.

I mean it’s cheese factor times ten. It is ridiculous. Don’t get me wrong, I do still like the movie; I like the story, the characters (the acting isn’t that great but..), and I like it a lot because of nostalgia.

But if I watched it for the first time today, I’d probably turn it off, or have some serious laughs, at the very least. It made me wonder about twenty years to the future, when I am showing my kids some movie I love, like Avatar.. will it be completely cheesy and ridiculous then?

Two Weeks

So.. just about two weeks to Andrew’s birthday, and I’ve only finished four rows on his birthday scarf. And that two weeks doesn’t include shipping time. Yeah, I’m probably not going to make it.

In addition to that, I think I’m ripping out those four rows today. See, the pattern was supposed to use a Channel Island Cast-On, which I’ve never done. I attempted it last night, ended up unraveling an entire skein of yarn (thanks, Mom, for winding that up for me!). I gave up and used the regular long-tail, which I like, but I really wanted to learn this other way. I went on YouTube and found a video how-to for the Channel Island and I really like the look and it makes more sense after watching the video. So, I’m going to try.

I’ve got tonight, tomorrow and Sunday (did you notice I didn’t include Saturday? Yep, this girl’s got an all-day date!) to see how far I get. If I’m not even close, I’ll have to resign and make this a Christmas gift. But, we’ll see. The pattern also has cabling, which I’ve never done, so… wish me luck.

You can follow the progress of my projects here. I will try to update that soon.

Yellow-Buttermilk Cupcakes

So.. this is about as simple as you can get.

Yellow Buttermilk Cupcakes

Simple cake with such amazing flavor and the perfect crumb. I used a dark chocolate buttercream frosting, but I think I need to try it with maybe some kind of vanilla. With sprinkles.

Happy Freakin' Earth Day

So.. yesterday was Earth day. I wore an Old Navy Earth Day t-shirt. I used a reusable bowl for my oatmeal, instead of the usual styrofoam. And I killed a tree.

Wait, what..?!?

I printed out over 600 pages yesterday for work, and I think my heart broke a little more with each sheet. In the world today I really don’t understand why we can’t do more things electronically. Paperless is the new black, right? And even if they think the actual legal document should be printed out and physically signed (come on, if I can do an e-signature for my taxes, why not everything else?!?!), I really don’t know why we have to print out so much of the back-up documentation. That’s what computer files are for.

When my boss called and asked how my day went, I told him it wasn’t great. My car is in limp mode, apparently. Won’t go above 3rd gear, which means anything above 15-20mph causes major engine revving. Something about too much oxygen in the exhaust. So, that sucks. But yesterday I thought it was the transmission, which sucks even more. I thought I might need a new car, so I did a little online shopping. And… I don’t want to buy a car. Too much money. I love not having a car payment right now. So, I was in a bad mood about that. I had to deal with some really stupid people and really stupid e-mails. I was in a bad mood about that. And top it off, I printed out way too much paper on EARTH DAY.

“So what’s wrong?” my boss asked.

“I killed a tree. On Earth Day.”

“Earth Day.. haha that’s right! So.. you feel bad?” Uh, just a little bit!! “After work you should go to a bar, but instead of getting a glass, drink right out of the tap. You’d be saving a glass, see?”

Yeah, I really don’t think that makes up for wasting so much paper. But, thanks for trying. Instead I went home and baked cupcakes.
